Sony NEX gets major firmware soon, pink model in Japa
Sony's interchangeable lens NEX-series cameras will soon be updated with the latest, Version 03 firmware update. The software will fix some problems noted by users in the interface, and enable other features.
In the firmware, users will have the option of setting aperture and enabling autofocus in movie mode when using SAM and SSM Alpha-mount lenses on the required adapter.
The user-controlled PASM modes drew the most flak, and Sony addressed many of these issues. Users had to dig through menus to make changes to anything more complicated than exposure compensation, and the new software lets users customize the soft buttons on the rear of the camera. One of them can be set to one of ten functions, including ISO, white balance and manual focus assist.
The menus are also now quicker to navigate, as they loop from the last item to the first or vice versa. The last option used in each sub-menu is remembered, letting users quickly adjust or revert it when experimenting with the resulting image or a commonly accessed setting. The manual focus assist, also known as magnified live view, will remember where users zoomed in and revert to that point next time it's turned on.
