Nokia Plots Yet Another Course for Its Navteq Unit
Nokia has indicated that it will change the way it manages its Navteq mapping business moving forward. Though Navteq has operated independently from Nokia since it was acquired in 2007, Nokia now believes it is best to combine Navteq with its in-house, location-based services business. Moving forward, Nokia's Michael Halbherr will oversee this new unit, and Navteq's CEO, Larry Kaplan, will depart at the end of the year. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that the company will continue to make its map data and other location-based services available to outside companies, and it fact, Nokia hopes to expand this part of its business. The changes go into effect July 1. Nokia and Microsoft will use Navteq's map data for a future Windows Phone 7 mapping service, scheduled to launch after Nokia's first WP7 handsets debut.
